Drop odds and expected value

Opening one returns €0.67 in expected value against a €0.36 weapon case — about 1.9× its price. That is an average across many openings, not a forecast for one: most of it sits in rare drops the majority of openings never produce.

The Snakebite Case

One of the Cheapest Cases in the Game

Snakebite is an active-drop case and one of the least expensive containers available, which makes it a common choice for people opening in volume or working trade-up contracts. Its rare-special pool holds gloves. As with any cheap case, the interesting question is not the price of the case but the ratio between that price and what an average opening returns.

The Ratio Is the Number That Matters

The block above expresses the expected value both as a figure and as a proportion of the case price, because on a cheap case the proportion is the more meaningful of the two. A case costing a few cents can carry a healthy multiple while still returning very little in absolute terms, and a case costing several euros can do the reverse. Both readings are given so neither misleads on its own.

Trade-Ups and Single-Collection Cases

Because every skin in a weapon case belongs to that case's collection, cheap single-collection cases are the usual raw material for trade-up contracts. Ten skins of one rarity from chosen collections return one of the next rarity up. That is a separate activity from opening for a rare special, and it prices on the Mil-Spec and Restricted tiers rather than on the knife or glove pool.

Volume Openings and What They Actually Show

Because it is cheap, Snakebite is one of the cases people open in bulk, and bulk openings are the closest thing to a real-world test of an expected-value figure. Over enough openings the average converges on the number above; over a handful it tells you almost nothing. That gap between the long-run average and the short-run experience is the single most misunderstood part of case opening, and it is the reason this page publishes the arithmetic rather than a verdict.
