Float Value

Last updated: 6 August 2026

Float value is a hidden number, somewhere between 0.00 and 1.00, that gets assigned to a skin the moment it's generated. It measures wear: a float near 0.00 looks pristine, while a float near 1.00 looks battered and scratched. Two copies of the exact same skin can look completely different depending on where their float lands.

Every skin has its own minimum and maximum float range set by Valve, so not every skin can reach every exterior — some can only ever be Field-Tested or worse, others can drop as low as Factory New. Within a marketplace listing, the float is usually shown to two or more decimal places, and buyers hunting for the cleanest (or, for some finishes, the most textured) copy will filter by it directly rather than relying on the exterior label alone.

Float also drives price at the margins: two Field-Tested copies of the same skin can sell for noticeably different amounts depending on whether one sits at 0.18 (barely into the bracket) or 0.36 (nearly Well-Worn), even though both carry the same exterior name.
