CS2 Cache Is Back: What It Means for the Cache Collection

Cache rejoined Counter-Strike 2 on April 28, 2026, rebuilt in Source 2, and replaced Overpass in the ranked Active Duty pool on July 8, 2026, its first trip back to competitive play since being cut in 2019. The comeback is already pulling renewed attention toward the map's original 2014 skin collection. 

What Happened to Cache, and Why Is It Back?

Cache spent 2016 to 2019 in the official Active Duty rotation before Valve swapped it out for Vertigo. It never really left the community's radar, though, it stayed one of the most requested maps on FACEIT and community servers for years, prized for its tight, fast-paced mid-control fights. When Valve started rebuilding older maps for Source 2, Cache was consistently near the top of community wishlists, and its April 2026 return followed that same pattern Valve has used for other legacy maps: rebuild the geometry faithfully rather than redesign it.

What Changed in the Source 2 Rebuild

Valve kept the classic layout intact. Veterans will recognize callouts like Squeaky, Forklift, Heaven, and Vent/Checkers without relearning the map. The update itself is mostly under the hood: brighter, more consistent lighting that removes old dark spots, refined sightlines, adjusted utility angles, and smoother collision for boosts and jumps. Valve also leaned into the map's original CS:GO-era look rather than the flatter, green-tinted style used on some other Source 2 remasters, so it reads as a faithful restoration rather than a reimagining.

Cache's Route Back to Active Duty

What About the Original Cache Collection?

Cache has its own weapon collection dating back to August 2014, themed around the map's Eastern European nuclear facility setting: skins like the Galil AR | Cerberus, FAMAS | Styx, Glock-18 | Reactor, Tec-9 | Toxic, and AUG | Radiation Hazard, among 13 skins in total. The set spans both rifles and pistols slots, three rifles and two pistols, giving traders exposure to both categories rather than being concentrated in one. Because CS2 no longer ties case drops to whichever map you're playing, Cache's return doesn't reopen that case for regular drops, supply of the standard versions stays exactly as fixed as it was before the map came back.

What could change is the souvenir side. Souvenir packages are generated from whichever map is being played at a given Major, so if Cache is in the map pool for a future Major, that would be the first opportunity in years for new Souvenir Cache Collection items to enter circulation. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it's the detail worth watching if you hold any of these skins.

Why This Matters for Skin Traders, Not Just Players

A map rotation on its own rarely moves prices in a straight line, Cache coming back doesn't automatically make Cache Collection skins more valuable. What it does reliably do is put a dormant, thematically-linked collection back in front of a much larger audience: returning players re-checking their inventories, content creators covering the map's history, and pros getting clipped on it for the first time in CS2. That kind of attention has historically produced short-term bumps in search interest and listing activity around older, thematically related skins, even without a direct supply change.
